Conceptual Type: Limerence

“Limerence” is a four-part piece that utilizes typography and composition to explore the concept of its title: limerence. Limerence is defined as “a state of intense often involuntary romantic attachment to a person who does not reciprocate the feelings and that is often characterized by excessive preoccupation and obsessive behaviors.” Each panel utilizes words and type in a unique way, unpacking the layers and complexity of limerence as an emotion and experience.
Projection: A large body of text crafts the silhouette of a man. The text is composed of lyrics to "Limerence" by Jutes. The panel represents how the subject of an infatuation so intense can only be a projection of our own mind, rather than something based in reality.
Unrequited: As shown, this panel represents the often one-sided nature of limerence. The "O" and "V" come together to form half of a heart, an offering of love and affection. Rather than being reciprocated, the word unrequited stands small and cold beside it, leaving it incomplete.
Obsession: The giddy experience of having a crush is reminiscent of youth. Actions like writing names together in notebooks and diary entries detailing each passing interactions. Diaries are place of refuge, containing our most raw, deepest thoughts. Using different handwritten typefaces, each syllable shows a descent into madness as an innocent crush intensifies into an obsession.
Fixation: Alongside limerence may come a fixation on this person and a determination to actualize one's fantasies. The letters "X" and "O," common symbols of affectionate actions, are deconstructed and rearranged to form a crosshair. The "U" thus becomes a target of this affection and desire.
